莱索托拥有丰富的砂岩资源。在莱索托的几处美轮美奂的天然雕塑和山洞里，都能看到第一批定居者们尤其是布须曼人（也称“丛林人”）使用砂岩搭建避难所，或留下地标，也就是后来的布须曼岩画等。砂岩的永恒品质、多种用途以及耐久性保证了建筑风格在展现现代变化的同时仍能保留莱索托统一的传统建筑材料。这就确保了砂岩在当下甚至是未来都将作为莱索托城乡地区首选地建筑材料。

Sandstone is an abundant resource of Lesatho. Lesotho has several beautiful natural sculptures and
caves where the first settlers in particular the bushman used them for shelter and later left land
marks such as bushman paintings. The timeless quality of sandstone, its multi-faceted usage and its
durability ensures that architectural fashion are portraying the change of modern times yet
maintaining the overall traditional building material within Lesotho. This ensures that sandstone is
and will remain the preferred building material in rural and urban areas of Lesotho even for times to
come.
Sandstone mining in rural areas provides for jobs and an abundance of affordable building materials
for local residents. Urban areas get a constant facelift with new creations of use of sandstone which
gives the cities a distinct character.
